Teen convicted of killing fellow gang member

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) — A central Florida teen has been convicted of fatally shooting another teen in the head.

A Polk County jury found the 17-year-old guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder. The Ledger (http://goo.gl/xjxD3q) reports the teen that faces a possible life sentence, but his age keeps him from facing a mandatory life sentence or the death penalty.

Authorities say the teen killed a fellow gang member, 17-year-old DaMarco Powell, in February 2014.

Defense attorneys say the prosecution’s main witness, another teen in the gang, was actually involved in Powell’s murder and lied to authorities to shift the blame from himself.
