Viewer Advocacy
We at News Channel 8 will be advocates for our viewers. This means we will help empower them to improve their lives and community, to hold the powerful accountable and to ensure the voice of the public is heard in the process of setting public policy. News Channel 8 will ask the tough questions, dig hard for facts and push hard for answers. Enterprise reporting lies at the heart of this commitment.
Solutions
The desire to spotlight solutions, not simply to find problems, will inspire our journalism. We will help people directly when possible and appropriate. We will give voice to a wide range of viewpoints and ideas. We will seek opportunities to provide forums for community conversation, discussion and deliberation.
Relevance, Fairness and Accuracy
We will seek stories that are relevant to our viewers, provide viewer benefit and add value to their lives. We will tell the stories necessary to show the full fabric of life in our communities, and to portray those communities and the people who live there in a fair and accurate light.
Accountability
We will hold those with power, responsibility and influence accountable. This includes elected public officials; non-elected civil servants, educators and law enforcement officials; businesses; public figures; and any that hold or seek power and influence.
Self-Accountability
News Channel 8 subscribes to the RTNDA and SPJ codes of ethics, which require journalists to seek the truth and report it, to minimize harm, to act independently and to be accountable. We will hold ourselves accountable to the public by stating publicly what we stand for and by providing a mechanism for the public to hold us to it. We will continually evaluate our performance in light of our stated principles and will invite the public to participate in this process. We will admit mistakes and promptly take the appropriate steps to correct them.
Summary
The desire to serve our viewers will drive us. We will dedicate ourselves to this goal with passion, vigor and a sense of urgency. We will reach out to and join with our viewers when appropriate to fulfill these goals. We will open a dialogue with them to ensure our accountability. We will meet, in the fullest manner possible, the promise contained in our slogan, "On Your Side."
