Police shoot, kill machete-wielding suspect in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Police shot and killed a man armed with a machete Saturday evening in Tampa after he refused to drop his weapon, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in the 1800 Blk of Marvy Ave.

Police responded to a call about a man threatening his 17-year-old female cousin with a machete.

Upon arrival, officers encountered  48-year-old Sidney T. Richardson. The officers ordered Richardson to drop his machete several times. When he refused, an officer deployed his taser, but Richardson still wouldn’t drop the weapon.

In fear for their safety, and for the safety of his relative, one of the officers opened fire, hitting Richardson.

Police said Richardson died of his injuries. Neither the officer nor the teen was injured in the incident.
