Many cold weather shelters to open in Tampa Bay area

TAMPA BAY, Fla. (WFLA) – Cold weather shelters will be open Thursday night in many Tampa Bay area counties. We will continue to update this list as new information is released.

The following shelters will be open in Pinellas County:

The Pinellas County cold night shelters for the homeless will be open on the following dates: Wednesday, Jan. 3 and Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018. There is a possibility the shelters may open on Friday evening as well if it remains cold.

The shelters open between 6 and 6:30 p.m. (Peace Memorial opens at 5 p.m.), accept guests all night long, and close the following morning at approximately

6 a.m.  Shelter guests are provided a hot evening meal, a warm, safe place to spend the night, and breakfast the following morning. A follow up message will be forwarded should the cold night shelters open on additional nights.

Families will be placed in family shelters on cold nights.  Families should call 2-1-1 to make these arrangements.

The following shelters will be open in Hillsborough County:

Those who need transportation to a cold weather shelter should call 813-272-7272 before 5:30 and 8 p.m. to arrange a ride.

Officials recommend calling for a ride only if you are stranded in cold weather or live in a home without adequate heat and are physically unable to get to a shelter.

The following shelters will open in Pasco County at 6 p.m.:

These shelters will be open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Jan. 6.

The following shelters will open in Citrus County at 7 p.m.:

The regular transit bus system is not active today because of the holiday. A bus will be provided to take people from “Connections” in Inverness to The Salvation Army. That bus should pick up between 6:30-6:45 PM. A return bus will be provided at the shelter close the following morning.
