1 killed in accident that closed Sligh Avenue, other drivers were racing

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A multi-vehicle crash closed a busy Tampa road Tuesday morning.

Tampa police closed both directions of Sligh Avenue in between Florida Avenue and Lynn Avenue for a period of time. It is now reopen.

The driver of a 2012 Dodge Ram, identified as Joseph Obregon, was seen by witnesses revving his engine as a traffic signal, then accelerating from a stop, causing the truck to lose traction.

A white truck next to the Dodge Ram was operating in a similar manner.

Obregon and the other truck stopped at a traffic light at Florida Avenue and rapidly accelerated, reaching a speed estimated by witnesses to be 70 mph.

Obregon’s truck struck another vehicle that was crossing Sligh.

The impact of the crash caused the other vehicle to strike a power pole. The crash killed the passenger, William Val Swartz.

The driver of the other car is in critical condition.

Obregon struck another vehicle, causing minor injuries to that driver.

Obgregon was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving with serious bodily injury, two counts of reckless driving with injury and property damage and racing.

The driver of the other truck has not been identified or located.
