Florida State fraternity pledge found dead after party

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP/WFLA) – Police are investigating the death of a Florida State University fraternity pledge at a chapter party.

The body of 20-year-old Andrew Coffey was found Friday around 10 a.m.  Police did not confirm his death until 10 p.m.

Coffey was found unresponsive at his home, a mile away from campus.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that officers were collecting alcoholic beverage bottles that were scattered on the home’s porch as evidence.

Coffey was reportedly a pledge for the Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. The fraternity has been suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Florida State University released a statement saying in part:

“We do not yet have details surrounding the passing today of student Andrew Coffey, but we will work closely with the Tallahassee Police Department.”
