Woman hit by truck while walking in center lane of I-75 in Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Investigators are trying to figure out why a woman was walking in the center lane of Interstate-75 early Tuesday morning.

The woman, who has not been identified, was hit by a semi-truck and suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said it happened around 3:35 in the southbound lanes near the 273 milepost. The tractor-trailer was driven by Gerald Davis, 47, of Quitman, Georgia.

The incident caused traffic on I-75 to be backed up for hours during the busy morning commute.

At first, the southbound lanes of I-75 were closed, so FHP troopers could investigate. Then, the southbound, center and inside lanes of I-75 were closed north of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Vehicles were allowed to drive in one lane.

The lane closures caused traffic to back up from Hillsborough to Pasco County.

The woman has not been identified.
