The Tampa Museum of Art is proud to present “the queen of New York City nightlife” Susanne Bartsch as the subject of this year’s CITY. Bartsch has been a pioneer on the NYC fashion, art and underground club scene since the 1980s, serving as a friend and muse to legions of game-changing fashion designers such as John Galliano, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.
A Kickstarter-funded documentary about her life, @Bartschland, will debut at the Toronto Film Festival this year, “an investigation, the filmmakers say, into her eccentric life, her inclusive ethos, and the constellation of people she’s inspired.” (vogue.com)
In 2015, the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) mounted Fashion Underground: The World of Susanne Bartsch, a retrospective of her 30-year career and the designer ensembles inspired by her creativity and the culture she promotes.
Leading up to the CITY event, the Tampa Museum of Art will feature its own exhibition of approximately 35 designer looks, from both FIT’s retrospective and Bartsch’s personal collection, opening July 28, 2017.
