Settlement reached in Jameis Winston civil sexual assault case

Jameis Winston

(WFLA) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston and the woman who filed a sexual assault lawsuit against him in civil court have reached a settlement. News Channel 8 obtained the court documents, which were filed Wednesday.

The documents provide few details. The clerk’s minutes state, “The parties have reached a compromise with contingencies.” The two will likely file joint motions to dismiss the case within 20 days, according to the documents.

Erica Kinsman had filed suit over claims of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress arising out of forcible rape. She filed a lawsuit in the Circuit Court of the Ninth Judicial District.

Kinsman went public with her allegations earlier this year.

Winston then filed a countersuit. In the filing, Winston says the sexual assault claim hurt his ability to receive endorsement deals.

In January 2016 Florida State University announced a settlement with Kinsman, who had filed a federal Title IX lawsuit against the school. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
