ORLANDO, Fla. (WESH) —The owner of Pulse nightclub says she is committed to reopening the club in a new location.
Pulse owner Barbara Poma said Friday that she plans to rebuild the nightclub in a new location, while working with the community to design a memorial at the current site.
Poma said on Monday that she will not be selling the building to the city of Orlando – a deal that would have cost the city $2.25 million.
The city hoped to convert the property into a permanent memorial, where mourners have gathered ever since the June 12 mass shooting.
Poma issued the following statement Friday afternoon:
“We will soon begin moving forward with a community-driven effort to determine and design a proper memorial that serves as a sanctuary for healing and all that Pulse represented to so many people and families. And while there is no timeline, I am committed to rebuilding Pulse Nightclub in a new location and create another place where members of the LGBTQ community can again have a place where they can be themselves. That’s what Pulse was and shall be again.”
