A St. Petersburg native appeared Wednesday night in NBC’s “Hairspray Live.” The production aired from 8 to 10:55 p.m.

Ephraim Sykes played Seaweed. J. Stubbs.

Sykes was born and raised in St. Petersburg. He made his community extremely proud Wednesday.

News Channel 8 talked with his father, Reverend Manuel Sykes.

“Like any father, you know, I wanted him in baseball and basketball. You know, trying to guide him in those directions,” the reverand said.

For a while the younger Ephram tried both sports, but eventually his feet took center stage.

“The dance thing it just kept excelling and excelling,” his dad said.
