Investigators: Trademark Metals Recycling fire caused by spontaneous combustion

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Hillsborough County Fire Investigators say the cause of a fire at Trademark Metals Recycling on Friday was due to spontaneous combustion.

Emergency crews received the fire call at the facility on Port Sutton Road in Tampa at 5 p.m.

When emergency crews arrived, they reported an approximately 20-ton pile of metal on fire in the facility.

It took firefighters about nine hours to get the fire under control and around 11 to clear the scene.

Investigators were then called to begin their investigation.

During interviews of crews and on-scene thermal imaging surveillance cameras, crews determined the cause of the fire to be spontaneous combustion.

Officials said it happened due to buildup of heat within the metal pile, caused by materials oxidizing and the heat from the chemical reaction being trapped.

Trademark Metals crews told investigators they were working in the pile when it started to smoke, then caught fire.

No one was injured during the fire.
