PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (WFLA) – Police arrested a Pinellas Park woman for allegedly doctor shopping – at an animal hospital.

Malorie Ruiz, age 29, is charged with doctor shopping and attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.

The investigation began in October when a local animal hospital and pharmacy contacted authorities. Ruiz brought her dog, Tony Montana, to the Park Animal Hospital asking for a prescription for Alpazolam, a form of Xanax.

The hospital’s owner, Rachel McGlamery, said Ruiz soon called back asking for a prescription refill. “And then she called and said that she was going out of town and they dropped the drugs in the toilet or something,” McGlamery said. “Oh no, she couldn’t find the key … The key to the safe or some sort of crap.”

When Park refused to work with her, Ruiz shopped elsewhere. When she went to get the prescriptions filled, Krystal Kacarka, a pharmacy technician at Alexander Pharmacy, saw red flags.

“Oh my God, it was insane. She came in here, called the very next day. Then she called again the following day,” Kacarka said. “Oh yeah, then she said that she had to go … She was leaving for Europe and she needed it filled right then and there.”

Pinellas Park Police Sgt. Michael Lynch said many of the medications prescribed for animals are the same as humans. “Sometimes the dosage is a lot less,” Lynch said.  “Depending on the size of the animal of course as opposed to a human.”

Deputies released Ruiz from the Pinellas County Jail after she posted a $4,000 bond. Her Facebook page indicates she has training in veterinary medicine and worked with animals at several locations in Pinellas County. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
