NAPLES, Fla. (WFLA) – Staff and patrons of the Naples Zoo are mourning the death of a beloved resident.

Sumba, a female white-handed gibbon, was found dead in a lake at the zoo.

A zoo spokesperson said that Sumba was discovered missing from her island on Monday.

A search of the zoo grounds, surrounding areas and Lake Victoria was conducted.

Zoo staff continued to search for Sumba throughout Tuesday and Wednesday and until noon Thursday, when her body was recovered from the lake.

“Sumba will be greatly missed by Naples Zoo staff, volunteers and guests,” said the zoo on its Facebook page.
