SARASOTA, FL (WFLA) — Sarasota police have arrested a couple for child neglect after five children were found living in deplorable conditions.

Police responded to a welfare check at 1315 18th Street, where Amanda Dean, 34, and Joseph Dromeshauser III, 34, lived. When Officers arrived, they found five children: Four boys, ages 17, 12, 10 and 2-years old male and an 11-month-old girl.childabuse1

Officers observed broken glass scattered throughout the home, animal and human feces on the floor, trash, clothes, rotting food and a strong order of urine throughout the home.

Countertops and sinks were filled with dishes, old rotting food, trash and bottles filled with urine, police say. Officers found a burnt brillo and a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine in plain view, and multiple prescription pill containers left open within reach of children.

“The conditions in this home were the worst I’ve ever seen,” said Detective Megan Buck, Criminal Investigations Division. “No child or adult should have to live in conditions like this. Someone knew something wasn’t right with this family and called law enforcement. I’m thankful they did,” said Detective Buck.

Police contacted Department of Children and Families and the children were removed from the home.

After one hour on scene, police located Dean hiding in a closet. She told police she was afraid to go to jail.

Both Dromeshauser and Dean are being held at the Sarasota County Jail. They’ve each been charged with five counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. Dromeshauser has also been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
