Tampa Bay funeral business goes digital to plan cremation services

BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — From grabbing food to ordering a ride, consumers have the power to do almost anything with a swipe on their smart phone or a click on their computer.

These services are typically aimed for folks above ground, but now, things are taking a turn six-feet under.

Tampa Bay-area families now can make and pay for cremation arrangements for themselves or a loved one online through Right Choice Cremation in Brandon — taking the old-school funeral business and bringing into the digital age.

“You are able to do all of the arrangements online, from selecting the urn and the keepsake items that your family may want, to paying and filing all of the necessary documents,” said managing funeral director Danielle Daugherty.

According to Right Choice Cremation, 2/3 of all adults shop online every month and 1/3 do so each week, so it would certainly appear that the time has come for this concept.

“Everyone is more tech savvy nowadays,” said Daugherty.

The concept of pre-planning your own cremation may sound morbid, but Daugherty believes it can be a gift to yourself and your family.

“Pre-arranging your funeral is something that is a gift to your family in the future, so that they don’t have to worry about it when you pass away…it’s already taken care of,” said Daugherty.
