TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A talented group of high school students from the Tampa Bay area were in the national spotlight Thursday during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Lithia’s Joe E. Newsome High School Wolfpack Marching Band and Color Guard was the only Florida school selected for this year’s parade and was one of only 10 high school bands to perform in it.
Macy’s officials visited the school back in 2015 to surprise students and staff with the good news.
The band was selected from hundreds of applicants.
The Newsome High School Wolfpack Marching Band practiced in the school’s parking lot for 323 hours to get ready for the parade.
The band played a “hot musical medley to warm up Manhattan” in the parade. One of the songs performed was “You Are My Sunshine” which seemed like the perfect choice for a marching band from the Sunshine State.
The Newsome High School Wolfpack Marching Band was the first Hillsborough County high school marching band to be invited to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, according to the band’s GoFundMe page.
