Everything you missed from the 2016 American Music Awards

(WFLA) — WFLA News Channel 8’s Lila Gross is breaking down all of the biggest moments, and of course the winners, from the 2016 American Music Awards.

Maroon 5 took the stage for the first time ever to play “Don’t Wanna Know” as the last song of the night.

Ariana Grade wins the biggest award of the night – Artist of the Year – and wants to bring “light and unification” to people through her art of music.

Selena Gomez wins Pop/Rock Female artist and chokes back tears accepting her award. She said she was broken last year and wants to see more genuine feelings, not bodies, on Instagram.

American Music Award of Merit recipient Sting sang a melody of the greatest hits and the audience sang along the whole time.

Green Day performed in a true 1990s fashion, while the crowd jumped along on their feet. They chanted against the KKK and Donald Trump.

Host Jay Pharoah called out Kanye West for not attending tonight after his pro-Trump rant and canceling his concert.

Twenty One Pilots won Alternative Artist award and thanked fans for still listening to live music and attending concerts.

Idina Menzel and Mark Cuban slammed president-elect Trump and said they support the play Hamilton, which Trump has deemed as “unsafe.”

Lady GaGa gave her all when she performed “Million Reasons,” and the scenery was incredible. The audience gave her a standing ovation.

Purple Rain won the award for the best movie soundtrack, and the band thanked late singer Prince who changed the music industry.

Audience members literally cried as Justin Bieber sang “Let Me Love You,” just a tad off beat.

Drake wins Rap/Hip Hop Artist and gives a shoutout to all artists just trying to make music.

Chrissy Teigen introduces the “love of [her] life,” husband John Legend. But, she also mouths some choice words for Donald Trump.

Zayn Malik wins New Artist of the Year and the crowd went wild.

Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande absolutely destroyed the game in their performance of Side to Side, but that’s not surprising.

T.J. Miller and Olivia Munn hilariously announced Tim McGraw as the winner of best Country Song.

Fifth Harmony and Ty Dolla $ign won Collaboration of the Year for their song “Work From Home.”

The Weekend sounded incredible live when he sang his new hit “Starboy.”

The Chainsmokers win the Electronic Dance Music award and gives thanks to the AMA’s for having a category for their music genre.

Shawn Mendes performed “Mercy” and the crowd sang along the entire time.

Halsey and The Chainsmokers showing a little distance tonight with their performance of “Closer,” but they add a bit of remix to the AMA version.

Drake wins Rap/Hip-Hop Album and kept his thanks, short and sweet and for the family.

Nail Horan serenades the crowd with his single, which went number one in 60 countries.

Pop/Rock Duo group award goes to 21 Pilots.

Hosts Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoah did impressions of president-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump.

Bruno Mars performs his hit 24 Magic first at the AMA’s.
