Girl struck walking to elementary school in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An 8-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle just after 7 a.m. Tuesday morning while walking to Cleveland Elementary School, Tampa Police say.

Police say Vanessa Marquez was walking eastbound on Hollywood Street to school with her sibling when she stepped off of the curb and into Florida Avenue. The passenger side rear view mirror of a BMW traveling south on Florida Avenue struck the child in her face.

Tampa Police officers and Tampa Fire medics responded to the scene. Marquez was transported to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Florida Ave. is shut down in both directions in the area.
