‘Better Call Behnken’ to help reunite Tampa Bay area residents with unclaimed money

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — You could have unclaimed money or property and not even know about it.

The office of Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater keeps track of unclaimed property and money in Florida. The money is often from dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance and utility companies, securities and trust holdings.

The unclaimed property is often from abandoned safe deposit boxes and includes tangible property like watches, jewelry, coins, currency, stamps, historical items and other miscellaneous articles.

In August, we were able to get more than 3,700 accounts claimed with those claims totaling more than $1 million. Now, we’re hoping to connect even more people with even more unclaimed money.

For information on accessing unclaimed property after tonight, go here.

Tonight, on WFLA News Channel 8 we’re holding an unclaimed money phone bank. Between 5 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. you can call 1-800-528-0808 to see if there’s unclaimed money you may be owed.
