Sarasota business damaged, gas line ruptured when driver goes up on sidewalk

The crash and cleanup shutdown the roadway for 90 minutes Sunday morning.

SARASOTA, Fl. (WFLA) – A single-vehicle crash shutdown a portion of US 301 in Sarasota early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred just after 5:30 am near the intersection of Main St. in the city’s downtown district.

According to a Sarasota Police Department report the driver of the vehicle was not injured. His vehicle went up on a sidewalk, damaged a nearby business and struck a gas line.

A crew from Sarasota County Fire Rescue with assistance from the gas company repaired the broken line. No evacuations were needed and the roadway was re-opened just after 7 am.

The official cause of the crash is under investigation with charges pending against the driver.
