2 teens arrested in connection with Portland Trump protest shooting

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two 18-year-olds have been arrested after a man was shot  during the fourth night of protests in Portland, OR.

Four people were detained Saturday morning and of those, 2 were arrested. Steffon Marquise Corothers and Shamar Xavier Hunter were booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Corothers faces one charge of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon and Hunter faces 6 counts of attempted murder and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.

According to police, there was an altercation between a protester and the occupants of a car on the bridge. A suspect got out of the car and fired multiple shots, causing non life-threatening injuries to the man.

“For our staff and our officers, when you hear the gunfire and then you have a shooting on the bridge and you know it’s a protest, everybody’s heart kind of stopped,” Sgt. Pete Simpson said. “It’s really worst case scenario and really an outlier of a circumstance.”

Early Saturday morning, the suspect’s vehicle was spotted by an off-duty officer around NE 102nd and Sandy. On-duty officers stopped the car and detained 4 people, all believed to be gang members, Portland police said. A gun was found in the car, according to police.

Simpson said the 2 are gang-affiliated but they don’t believe the shooting was gang motivated.

“We don’t believe the target in the shooting had any gang involvement at all it appears to be conflict between gang member criminals with guns and people in a protest,” Simpson said.
