ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – A 72-year-old school crossing guard died from injuries he suffered after being hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in St. Petersburg.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., David Roundtree was hit by a car on 9th AV North., near 43rd Street.
A St. Petersburg Police Department spokesperson said that Roundtree was setting up his school zone cones on 9th AV N in preparation for 2:35 dismissal at Mt. Vernon Elementary.
A silver Toyota Scion traveling westbound on 9th Avebue and hit a pick up truck, then hit the crossing guard, and also hit a school zone sign and a small tree, and kept going several blocks.
A witness had seen the Toyota driving erratically for several blocks before the accident.
Roundtree was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had been a crossing guard for three years. No one else was injured.
The driver of the Toyota, Charles Hunter Walton, 26, was charged with DUI manslaughter. An 18 year old woman passenger was not charged.
