POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Polk deputies still need your help finding the hit and run driver that left a Tampa woman dead and one of their own severely injured.
Jessica Enchautegui got into a wreck on State Road 60 just east of Lake Wales in Polk County.
She hit a tree but was able to get out of her car and flag Deputy Adam Pennell for help. While calling for emergency crews — another driver hit the deputy and Jessica leaving both for dead. Jessica died. The deputy still in critical condition.
Jessica’s family tells us they’re not sleeping. They still can’t believe this happened and more than anything, they need answers.
“I just can’t believe it. I am still in denial,” said Maria Enchautegui, Jessica’s mom.
The way Jessica went, bothers her mom the most.
“Someone just with no heart. Not stopping and helping them. Maybe he could have helped my daughter.”
Jessica was a single mom to two boys, an 16-year-old and an 11-year-old. Her son says the only way he’s getting through this is using the lesson his mom taught him.
“Would always tell me, everything always happens for a reason. So I’m going to stick by that and keep my head straight,” said Xavier Enchautegui.
The family begs anyone who knows anything to please help them.
And for the driver who is responsible –they beg you just to admit that you did this.
“Just come out and say it just for peace of mind. And I hope that God will forgive you,” said Maria Enchautegui, Jessica’s mom.
There is a $10,000 reward for any information that would lead to the driver’s arrest.
Sheriff’s deputy Adam Pennell had surgery Tuesday on his hip. Doctors told the family the surgery went well but he could need another surgery.
