FHP seeks Clearwater hit-and-run suspect

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) – Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a hit-and-run suspect.

The incidents he is being sought for occurred along US 19 near Roosevelt Blvd. in Clearwater just before 10 am Sunday.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, a trooper observed a 2015 Honda Civic traveling at a high rate of speed near 49th St. North.  The report states he clocked the vehicle traveling 90 miles-per-hour so he attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

The vehicle speed away, up US 19 Frontage Rd. where it collided with a 2016 Honda driven by James Porter of Clearwater. The impact caused Porter’s vehicle to rotate, it struck another vehicle that was propelled into a fourth.

Following the crash, the driver of the Civic fled on foot into a nearby parking lot. He was later spotted in the lobby of a Roadway Inn Hotel. Investigators have obtained surveillance video from the hotel showing the suspect.

He is an African-American male with shoulder length braided hair; he was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jean shorts.
