Fire officials: Woman who died in fire may have been smoking with oxygen therapy unit

SPRING HILL, Fla. (WFLA) – A woman has died from burns after smoking while using her oxygen therapy unit, according to the Hernando County Fire Rescue.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Spring Hill Assisted Living facility located at 8329 Cessna Drive. HCFR units responded to a report of a person on fire after 2 p.m.

Firefighters found a portion of the exterior of the building on fire and a body on the ground. Fire crews extinguished the fire and paramedics tended to the victim. Due to the extent of her injuries, the woman died at the scene.

The scene was turned to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations. The investigation revealed that the 73-year-old victim was the resident at the facility. She may have been smoking while using her oxygen tubing therapy, according to HCFR.
