State representative calling for FDLE investigation of Hillsborough PTC

Rep. Dana Young/R Tampa

(WFLA) – State Representative Dana Young is asking the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the head of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission.

Young said she finds the relationship between PTC Executive Director Kyle Cockream and cab companies “disturbing.” News Channel 8 has obtained a number of emails between Cockream and the heads of cab companies.

“It definitely concerns me that there is any sort of email communication between an alleged regulator, somebody who is being paid to protect the public and the regulated entities,” Young said.

Cockream turned down several requests for an interview about the relationship he has with cab companies. He has responded to questions before about the relationship through a public relations firm hired by the PTC.

Cockream wrote the the emails have been “taken out of context.” However, he turned down requests to respond to questions about the potential for an FDLE investigation.

Young said it appears the relationship Cockream has with cab companies is inappropriate. “It’s clear that right now we have the fox guarding the hen house here in Hillsborough County. The PTC has been a disaster and they continue eroding the confidence of the people here in Hillsborough County,” she said.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and State Senator Jeff Brandes are also calling for the PTC to be shut down. They say its duties should be handled by another agency.
Young believes the FDLE investigation may help with that.

“I think that now we can put all of the facts that we have in the hands of the investigators and let them decide exactly what’s going on and whether there is any actionable conduct,” Young said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
