Witnesses help rescue driver from fiery crash in Florida

PALM BAY, Fla. (WFLA) – Palm Bay Police officers and several bystanders helped rescue a driver from a car that caught on fire after a crash in Palm Bay Sunday.

The crash happened at 4700 Dixie Highway. Palm Bay Police Sgt. Steve Shytle and Ofc. Ryan VanNote responded to the report of a car crash at that location. They found the car over the embankment and on fire.

The officers saw the driver trapped in the car and began a rescue attempt. According to Palm Bay officials, during the extraction the driver became combative and the officers had to physically restrain the driver while getting him back to the edge of the road and away from the fire.

Several citizens helped pull the officers and the driver to safety. Palm Bay Fire Rescue responded and provided medical treatment to the driver.

The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

According to PBPD, it was a two-car crash, and one vehicle went off the road. The second car stayed on the roadway.

There are not other reported injuries except minor scratches and scrapes the officers and the civilians suffered while getting the driver out.
