Father who posted heartbreaking viral video explains why he did it

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The father behind a heartbreaking viral video showing him telling his son that the boy’s mother died of a drug overdose is speaking out.

Brenden Clark, the dad in the Facebook video, says he posted it to help addicts struggling to find recovery, but he never thought it would get so much attention.

“That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. For hours I contemplated, ‘How am I gonna tell my son that his mother just died?’”

Since posting the video Monday evening, over 31 million people have watched it and the number keeps climbing.

“I had an idea to do what I did, not thinking of the attention it could bring, but mainly focusing on the message it would send to people in active addiction,” Clark said.

Ryan Sheridan, executive director of Breaking Point Recovery Center in Austintown, thinks we can all learn from it.

“I hope other people talk about it, I hope other people spread the word,” he said. “You hear it or read it, you see it on TV, but do you ever see it real life that graphically?”

The response to the video has been overwhelming.

“I’ve gotten, I don’t even know how many, messages from people, thanking me, telling me that they needed to see that, telling me that it literally changed them, changed their whole outlook on things,” Clark said.

He says his son has his moments, but is doing well surrounded by so much love and support.

“I know I have to step up twice as much now. I know that, really, as a parent, I’m the only parent that he has right now.”
