Fatal motorcycle crash causes traffic backup near I-4 ramp

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A fatal motorcycle crash blocked an Interstate 4 ramp near Interstate 275 junction near downtown Tampa Friday morning.

The crash happened before 4 a.m. Friday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Leonel Pena, 44, of Tampa, was riding his Suzuki motorcycle going west on I-4. Troopers said he failed to negotiate the turn and hit the outside guardrail. Pena was ejected. He died at the scene.

The crash got the westbound I-4 ramp to southbound I-275 blocked for hours. It remained closed for the investigation as of 6:50 a.m. causing traffic backups starting from Orient Road. Traffic was diverted onto northbound I-275.

Officers started letting cars through around 7 a.m.

You can take Selmon Expressway as an alternate route.
