PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — One chain of stores in the Tampa Bay area is yanking clown costumes off of their racks completely this Halloween season.
Goodwill-Suncoast is pulling clown costumes and accessories from shelves and racks in its 18 retail stores.
“We had a customer come to us who said they were really freaked out by this creepy clown phenomenon. We wanted to be sensitive to that so we decided to pull clown costumes from Goodwill-Suncoast stores,” said Chris Ward of Goodwill-Suncoast Inc.
The chain decided to pull clown costumes from their stores after reports of threats from creepy clowns, some of which came from right in our backyard.
“In a way, we could be protecting people if someone unknowingly dresses as a clown. I mean, I love clowns, but if someone unintentionally scares somebody, who knows what could happen? We see this as a step to protect the public as well,” said Ward.
For now, there aren’t any plans to bring back clown costumes to Goodwill-Suncoast stores in the future, but that could change once the creepy clown hysteria dies down.
