Update: 3:30 p.m.- Starkey Road has reopened.
PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Part of a busy Pinellas County road is closed due to a gas main break.
A Seminole Fire Rescue spokesperson says the gas main break is at Starkey Road and 78th Avenue.
As of 12:15 p.m., the road is blocked and authorities are asking people to avoid the area. Both northbound and southbound lanes are closed.
Some residents in nearby homes are being evacuated.
A contractor hit a gas line. The leak impacts a large gas main, so repairs could take a while and the road could also remain closed for a while.
Suggested detour routes include-
- Eastbound/Westbound: Take Park Boulevard or Bryan Dairy Road
- Northbound/Southbound: Take Seminole Boulevard, Belcher Road, 66th Street North or U.S. Highway 19 North
