Verdi’s epic implausible tale of family, love, revenge and death has stunned and awed opera lovers for over a century.

The recipe: four of the most demanding roles ever composed, a gypsy obsessed with avenging her mother who was burned alive for being a sorceress, two men in love with the same woman.  Mix in the “Anvil Chorus” of gypsies singing the praises of hard work, good wine and women.

Karl W. Hesser returns as Stage Director, and Glenn Breed returns as Costume Designer.  Karl- you may recall – directed last year’s Carmen, and Glenn Breed created those magnificent costumes for Abduction from the Seraglio.  We’re also glad to welcome back our lighting designer Keith Arsenault.  Steven K. Mitchell also designed St. Petersburg Opera’s critically-acclaimed set for Susannah. Our fight director from Carmen and La Bohême Dan Granke makes his return.

Speaking of returning to the St. Pete Opera stage, Michael Morrow (Manrico) was our ill-fated Don Jose in Carmen, and the amazing Alexandra Batsios (Leonora) – who performed beautifully as Konstanze in Abduction from the Seraglio –  will light up our stage once again.  You’ll be glad you caught these artists this time around when they’re joined by the remarkable talent of Claudia Chapa (Azucena) and Christopher Clayton (Count di Luna). provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
