Florida boy, 9, dies from carbon monoxide from generator used due to hurricane

(WESH) A 9-year-old boy has died after he was overcome by carbon monoxide in a Daytona Beach, Florida home.

The boy’s family was using a generator in their home, where the power is still out in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

A neighbor called 911 Monday morning after the child’s mother, almost incoherent, ran to her home to ask for help.

“There was a strong smell, and the husband didn’t respond. The little kid was vomiting, and the other one was in bed, he (passed) away,” the neighbor said.

The boy’s father remains in a coma. The mother and the other boy are recovering in the hospital, but the 9-year-old, identified as Jose Barrios, died.

Police said the generator was in another room and the family put towels under the door, but the deadly fumes apparently drifted in as they slept.
