ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) — On Monday an SUV hit two boys on a bicycle in St. Petersburg. The accident occurred around 4:50 p.m. on 54th Avenue North, near the Avesta apartments.
The boys are 9-year-old Evan Ewing and 6-year-old Justin Rowland. One boy was riding the bicycle, while the other was on the handle bars.
Troopers said the crash happened when traffic westbound on 54th was stopped. The boys, going north to south, traveled into the eastbound lanes. The driver of an eastbound Saturn Vue didn’t see the boys and hit them, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The impact threw them both into the street.
At a drug store near the accident scene, employee Tamika Williams said she sees the pair in the store often. “I watched them cross this road the other day, and it hurts me in my heart. I’m looking and peaking and thinking the worst, thinking they was gonna get hit,” Williams said.
Williams said she waited outside for the parents. “Haven’t seen any parents, so I was telling one of the employees, ‘If they come back in, let me know so I can call to police so at least we could try to find the parents,’” she said.
Williams wishes she called the police after seeing them in the store. “Not even 5 minutes later, he called me and said they got hit by a car,” she said.
Both boys are at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in serious condition.
