HOLIDAY, Fla. (WFLA) – A report of a suspicious person in Holiday on Saturday turned out to be a teenager wearing a clown mask, according to deputies with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
PCSO deputies on Saturday responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Longwood Drive around 2:20 p.m.
A woman told deputies she saw a male wearing a clown mask and walking in the westbound direction on Longwood Drive. At the time deputies were talking to the woman, a male matching the description of the caller walked by the scene.
Deputies interviewed the male, who was a 14-year-old boy. He told deputies he had no intention on scaring anyone and was wearing the mask because it was cool.
He told deputies he saw postings about clowns on social media and thought it was a good idea to wear the mask as he walked down the street. He then took the deputies to his house and showed them the clown mask.
The boy’s mother told deputies she bought the mask for her son to use as a Halloween costume. She said she has seen postings about clowns on Facebook and was scared for her son’s safety and told him not to wear the mask.
Deputies explained to the boy that is was not a good idea for him to wear the mask on the roadway.
The incident comes after the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office warned residents about the nationwide clown sighting trend and that some clowns are associating themselves with “evil, murder, rape and violent acts.”
The sheriff’s office said there have been several clown sightings in Pasco County and these types of reports are investigated as threats. The sheriff’s office also said deputies will arrest anyone who files a false report about a creepy clown.
