WATCH: Firefighters help riders evacuate disabled amusement ride at Mass. festival

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Riders were being plucked from an amusement ride at the Big E Thursday night in what is being described as “a controlled evacuation of a ride.”

West Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Dan  Bosari told 22News the department sent a Ladder truck to the Big E for a “ride that was stuck,”  just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday.  The ladder truck is equipped with an aerial platform.

Deputy Bosari said they were told the ride is called the “Wipeout.”

Eastern States Exposition marketing director Noreen Tassinari told 22News the ride is a huge disk that spins on the ground and tilts up on one side at a 45-degree angle.  She said the riders are secured with a steel bar.

“It’s stuck in the lifted position.. No one is injured,” Tassinari said.

Tassinari told 22News the ride is 18 to 20 feet off the ground at its highest point.

“Five people have already been taken off the ride,”  Said Tassinari.  “There are as many as 15 people left to be removed from the ride.”

Deputy Chief Borsari told 22News the West Springfield Fire Department has as many as 12 firefighters at the park.  Four are on the ladder truck.  Five are on the engine assigned to the Big E.

“And there are a few others there as well,” Borsari said.

The West Springfield Fire Department removed as many as 20 people off the ride. Everyone is safely back on the ground, and inspectors are looking into what went wrong. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
