TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Wine is a complex topic, with all of the different varieties, flavors and now ways it is packaged.
“I think, wine in general, the consumption has raised dramatically in the last ten years,” Wine Expert for Cru Cellars, Kendrick Lindsey, said.
Canned wine is the newest fad to hit the industry, so WFLA’s Lila Gross took a sip of the action.
Lila Wine is a company based in Massachusets that manufactures canned wine. The company produces three different types of wine including, rose, pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc.
“I do not think wine in a can is a fad, just like screw caps on wine bottles is not a fad,” Brett Vankoski, Lila Wine co-founder said. “They both just make too much sense, especially for wines that are made to be consumed fresh and young.”
Brett Vankoski, co-founder of Lila Wine said canned wine is catching on for numerous reasons.
“Lila was created so that people could enjoy great wine wherever and whenever they wanted,” Vankoski said. He pointed out that people are now enjoying wine by the pool, barbecues and concerts.
“Wine in a can is a better alternative [to a glass bottle],” Vankoski said. “It’s lighter, less fragile, and requires no extra equipment to open and enjoy.”
Lindsey said he thought the wine industry is pretentious at times, but canned wine gives it a new, hip vibe.
Vankoski adds the movement of craft beer in a can has helped boost the esteem of beverages in a can.
“People no longer associate the can with lesser quality,” Vankoski said.
Lindsey also said many wine lovers are beginning to look for unique varieties in their wine selections. He added it’s important to match what you’re eating to the wine you are choosing.
