HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Highlands County detectives are investigating the murder of a 95-year-old man.

Dominic Demundo was found dead in his home Monday. “A neighbor went to the gentleman’s house, heard the TV on, knocked on the door; nobody would come to it. He hadn’t been seen in a few days,” Chief Deputy Mark Schrader told News Channel 8.

Highlands County detectives said evidence from the scene and Demundo’s autopsy revealed his death was the result of a homicide. “They found the gentleman deceased on the kitchen floor. It was a violent, violent death,” Schrader said.

“He had a hell of a spirit. He was very well liked,” neighbor Abelardo Aguiou said.

Demundo’s death has been a shock to this quiet community. “Around here at night, after it gets dark, you drop a pin and you can hear it a mile away. There’s nothing that happens here,” Aguiou said.

Aguiou told News Channel 8 he often saw people in and out of the 95-year old man’s home doing work. “The driveway, inside painting and all that stuff,” he said.

“We believe recently, possibly online, he had contacted people to do work at his house.” Schrader said.

Detectives want to talk to those workers or anyone who may have seen them. “We’re asking anybody that may know this gentleman, or lived in the area and saw people coming and going, that they could give us some information on maybe who it is, or at least some description, or car descriptions. We don’t know exactly what happened, who he let in the house, but we do find a lot of our elderly people are a little naive, and they have to be very careful who they allow into the house,” investigators said.

Investigators are asking anyone who recently met Demundo to contact the sheriff’s office at 863-402-7250 to talk with Detective Jody Stowers.
