PLANT CITY, Fla. (WFLA) — Robert Milton took out a small life insurance policy on his mother, Virginia, when she was 60 years old. It was for $3,000. Milton thought it would help cover burial expenses.

That was 37 years ago. Milton kept paying, and now that his mother has passed, he’s having no luck collecting on the insurance policy.

“I’d just like some answers,” Milton said. “It shouldn’t be this hard to find some.”

Milton figures he’s paid American General Life Insurance Company, owned by AGI, more than $10,000, making two payments a year of $137.22.

When he calls the company’s toll-free number, listed on his statements, he waits – sometimes for hours – on hold. Then, the automated system did not recognize his policy number.

“It tells me to call Nashville and gives you a number, but I call that and when they answer, it’s New York, then they ask me for a policy number and i give them that and they say it does not exist,” Milton said.

Milton turned to 8 On Your Side’s Better Call Behnken for answers. A quick search online showed Milton is not alone. There are numerous complaints from other customers who complain they can’t collect on policies either.

A corporate spokeswoman could not answer questions as to what went wrong, but promised to get to the bottom of it. By the end of the day, a company representative called Milton and emailed him a form to fill out and submit by mail, in order to collect on the policy. He said the representative did not offer any explanation.

“I’m just happy I got this far now, and I hope to get the money soon,” Milton said.
