TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A young man is under arrest on a murder charge in connection with a stray bullet shooting death of a Tampa woman in June, Tampa police said.
Tyrell Rashard Warren, 19, is charged with second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. The shooting took place in June near the Central Court apartments on Columbus Drive.
According to TPD, they responded to a report of a gunfire at that location on June 23. They found a large crowd gathering in the parking lot and started working to determine who may have been firing guns.
About 90 feet away, Maria Rivera-Contreras was in the back seat of a car with her 9-year-old nephew and 16-year-old niece. She had just delivered food to a friend. The car was backing out of the driveway when the woman was struck by the stray bullet.
Her brother Victor Rivera took her to the hospital. She was pronounced dead there. Her family offered a reward to help determine who fired the fatal shot.
Friday afternoon, Tampa Police detectives confirmed that Tyrell Rashard Warren and another teen were having an argument and the guns were drawn. Warren was shooting at the direction of his opponent when his bullet killed Rivera-Contreras.
Warren is in jail with no bond.
He has several prior arrests in Hillsborough County, including drug possession, carrying concealed weapon without a permit, aggravated assault on a security guard, armed burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon among other charges.
