One dead after Hernando deputy-involved shooting

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Investigators are at the scene of a deadly shooting involving a Hernando County deputy.

Authorities say one person was pronounced dead at a trauma center.

The shooting happened shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday at a home located at 10264 Ridge Top Loop. The home is in the Enclave subdivision in Woodland Waters, Weeki Wachee.

Deputies said the incident started when a healthcare professional contacted 911 dispatchers to report a possibly suicidal person. The dispatcher said the person had weapons inside his or her residence.

“A deputy, who has crisis intervention training, and a sergeant, who has crisis intervention training and advanced de-escalation training, encountered the individual within the home. Initial reports indicate one of the first responders attempted to use less lethal means to take the subject into custody for the protection of all,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said.

Soon after that, shots were fired. Investigators say it is unclear at this time how many shots were fired. The person, whose identity has not been released, was then taken to the trauma center and pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate. Deputy Devorak and Sergeant Dunn have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
