North Port man buys lotto ticket during Hurricane Hermine, wins $1 million

Hollie Lyle Jr., of North Port, won $1 million.

NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) – It looks like Hurricane Hermine brought some good luck to a Tampa Bay area resident.

Hollie Lyle Jr., 56, of North Port, won $1 million playing a scratch off game.

Lyle said he bought the Scratch-Off ticket on Friday during the storm, and couldn’t believe what he saw when he scratched it.

“I was in complete shock; I’m still in shock. It’s very surreal!” he told lottery officials.

Lyle said he’s going to use some of his winnings to take his wife on a trip that they have been planning for years, according to a Florida Lottery news release.

“I’m going to keep working – I like what I do and I like who I work for – but I am going to take a couple of months off this spring so that my wife and I can hike the Appalachian Trail,” he said.

Lottery officials say Lyle bought the winning ticket at Petro Shop located at 3951 Clark Rd. in Sarasota. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
