Hillsborough deputy is on paid leave after firing shot, killing suspect

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A Hillsborough County deputy fired one shot at a man while executing a court-authorized search warrant Tuesday.

Around 8 a.m. the SWAT team responded to 432 Longwood Loop in Tampa with the search warrant for illegal narcotics. “This was the result of a month-long investigation as deputies had made purchases for illegal narcotics from Levonia Riggins,” deputies said.

The residence’s occupants exited after officials announced their reason for being there, deputies said. Deputies were advised that Riggins, 22, was still inside. Officials made repeated demands for Riggins to exit the residence.

Deputy Caleb Johnson, 32, spotted Riggins in a bedroom, “at which time Johnson perceived Riggins as an immediate threat and fired one shot striking Riggins,” deputies said.

Riggins died at Tampa General Hospital.

Deputies said an investigation is underway. It is believed at this time Riggins was unarmed.

Johnson is a seven-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and three-year veteran of the SWAT team. He is on leave with pay during the course of an administrative review. The State Attorney’s Office will continue the investigation.
