ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission received a call Tuesday about an injured manatee in Riviera Bay.

A boater “observed a manatee struggling at the surface with fresh watercraft wounds across its back,” FWC officials said.

A biologist from the FWC’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Lab found the male manatee, and a team rescued it.

The manatee is 8′ and weighs 715 pounds. The manatee was taken to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo for rehabilitation.

Officials plan to release him back into the wild when he’s healthy enough.

Call 888-404-3922 to report sick or dead manatees.
