Sheriff: Two would-be thieves shoot one another during failed robbery attempt

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. – Two suspects shot each other during an attempted armed robbery Saturday in Louisiana, authorities said.

Detectives received a call from two local hospitals about gunshot wound victims who reported they had been shot in a subdivision, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz said.

Guidroz said 18-year-old Brandon Louis suffered a single gunshot wound to his left pinky finger and 21-year-old Khalil Sam was shot in the upper chest. An investigation revealed Sam received a phone call from an acquaintance identified as Christopher Andrus, officials said.

Andrus allegedly said he was in the Royal Gardens subdivision and needed a ride back to Port Barre. “When the victims arrived to pick up Andrus, two males identified as Brandon Louis and Khalil Sam ran up to his truck both armed with a firearm. Sam went to the driver side window and Louis went to the passenger side window,” the sheriff said.

“Louis attempted to strike them with the firearm when the passenger hit his arm. The gun fired striking the victim on the left pinky finger and Sam in his upper part of his chest,” Guidroz added.

Louis, Sam and Andrus fled the scene. Guidroz said Andrus and Louis went to the sheriff’s office, where they told authorities Sam was shot by accident when the three were together, deputies said. The men allegedly said Louis dropped a gun.

“When detectives confronted Louis and Andrus with the evidence, both verbally confessed to the attempted armed robbery and the shooting,” Guidroz said. “Louis and Andrus also confessed that the same shot that struck the victim also struck Sam in the chest.”

Detectives were able to recover the gun used in the armed robbery. Andrus and Louis were both arrested.

After his release from the hospital, Sam was also taken into custody. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
