Opening date set for Tampa’s iconic Goody Goody restaurant

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – An iconic Tampa burger restaurant is reopening later this month.

Goody Goody Burgers is scheduled to open its doors Aug. 23 at 7 a.m.

The restaurant “was part of the fabric of Tampa before it closed in 2005,” restaurant staff said. “We’re looking forward to being that place once again when we open later this month.”

Customers will see chairs from one of the former locations, North Florida Avenue. “Legend has it that the contour of the seat was modeled on WWII pinup Betty Grable’s backside. The chairs were a little noisy back in the day on the dining room’s tile floor, so they’ll instead be utilized on the porch, but they’re in great shape and we look forward to our new guests being able to take a seat in the great history of this important restaurant,” staff said.

Goody Goody opened in 1925 and was a central part of Tampa’s food scene. Richard Gonzmart of the Columbia Restaurant Group revitalized the restaurant.

There used to be two locations in Tampa. Gonzmart frequented Goody Goody as a child and has been negotiating off and on for almost a decade for the rights to the brand.

Original recipes will be offered, including burgers made with ground beef from the Strickland ranch, the restaurant’s “secret sauce,” fries, shakes and pies. That includes the well-known butterscotch pie.

The original Goody Goody restaurants were drive-ins or drive-thrus, but the Hyde Park site will include table service. The new Goody Goody is located at 1601 W. Swann Ave.

The restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Breakfast will be served all day.
