North Port child dies after being struck by car

NORTH PORT, Fla. (WFLA) – A 5-year-old child hit by a vehicle in North Port on Monday afternoon has died, according to North Port Police.

It happened after 3 p.m. at Tropicaire Boulevard and Wampee Drive. North Port Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the scene. Tropicaire Boulevard was shut down in both directions during the investigation.

According to police, the child drove his bike into the roadway into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Chevy S10.

The child was airlifted to a hospital where he later died. Police say the child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. There are no charges at this time.
