What to watch: Opening Ceremony on NBC, August 5

What to watch: Rio's Opening Ceremony

Rio de Janeiro welcomes the world to Brazil during the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on August 5.

The Opening Ceremony airs on NBC at 8:00 pm ET, hosted by Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Hoda Kotb.

The Rio Olympic organizers have promised a truly original Opening Ceremony for their Games, which will take place inside the famous Maracanã stadium. Experience the culture of Brazil (expect to hear some slammin’ samba and see a waterfall of color synonymous with Rio’s Carnival), see your favorite athletes march in the Parade of Nations (check out their Olympic fashion) and finally find out who gets the honor of lighting the cauldron for these Olympic Games (will it be Pelé, or possibly basketball star Oscar Schmidt? It’s a secret until the end!).

On August 5, join the world in a celebration of global unity at the Opening Ceremony of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio only on NBC.
