Australian athletes hold ‘faux-pening’ Olympic ceremony in Florida

Australia's own Opening Ceremony

Australia 2016 Rio Olympics Florida

As the Olympic opening ceremony began, Australian track and field athletes took to social media around the same time for a celebration of their own.

The track and field team members are in Florida for last-minute preparations and did not attend the ceremonies since their events don’t start until much later in the Olympics. Wearing matching suits, team members took a series of selfies at a track to show their solidarity with their counterparts in Brazil.

Australia has brought a large contingent of athletes to Rio and has long been a power in swimming events.
